Gimme Shelter – All-day cocktails make for a great summer chill

Perhaps it’s the warm weather, or the fact that the sun shines for 20 hours a day this time of year, but there’s something about the summer that makes day drinking a national pastime in Canada.  And thank goodness for that, because the new cocktail menu at Shelter has something for every time of day.

Banana, eggs, coffee and vodka – it’s the breakfast of champions!

Morning: Banana, eggs, coffee and vodka – it’s the breakfast of champions! The Strain of Modern Life cocktail has everything you need to start your day. Using Park Distillery’s (Banff) espresso vodka, this delightful little number is sweet, citrusy and features cynar, banana du bresil, orange and egg white, leaving you with notes of coffee, banana and caramel.

Nothing takes the ick out of a sweaty afternoon like a refreshing dip.

Noon: Nothing takes the ick out of a sweaty afternoon like a refreshing dip. Shelter’s Night Garden cocktail brings the fresh with Wildlife Distillery Gin (Canmore), lemon, coconut, cucumber and tonic. In fact, if the temperature goes above 25, we could really commit to an afternoon of Night Gardens in Shelter’s suave-but-cozy lounge on a back-to-buzzing 1st Street fun zone.

Shelter’s Northern Lights cocktail delights the eyes, nose and palate.

Night: Sultry summer nights are an invitation to get sensual. Shelter’s Northern Lights cocktail delights the eyes, nose and palate with the colour-shifting Empress Gin (Victoria) partnered with Burwood Distillery (Calgary) honey medica and garnished with sage. Who knows what the night might bring with this gorgeous girl in your hand.

If you’re going to spend the day drinking at Shelter, be sure to sample the latest culinary offerings as well. We’re intrigued by Ichiban arancini and the giant s’more.
